BMR vs TDEE: What the Difference Actually Is
BMR is what you burn at rest; TDEE is what you burn in a day. The gap between them is where most calorie mistakes happen.

The short answer
BMR is the energy you would burn lying still for 24 hours. TDEE is everything you actually burn in a day: BMR plus digestion, plus every step, plus training. TDEE is always the larger number, usually by 40% to 70% for an average adult, and it is the one you use to set a calorie target.
The confusion matters because the two numbers look similar in format - both are thousands of calories - and because some apps label the same figure differently. Setting a food target from BMR produces a deficit far deeper than intended, which costs muscle and is rarely sustainable.

Resting energy: BMR and RMR
Basal metabolic rate is measured under strict laboratory conditions: after an overnight fast, lying still, awake but relaxed, in a room at a comfortable temperature. Resting metabolic rate is the looser version that most clinics and equations actually estimate, and it typically comes out 3% to 5% higher because the conditions are less controlled.
Resting energy covers the things you never think about: maintaining body temperature, pumping blood, breathing, repairing tissue and running the brain, liver and kidneys. These processes account for 60% to 70% of daily energy expenditure for most adults, which is why resting energy is the largest single number in the calorie equation.
What TDEE adds on top
Three things turn BMR into TDEE. The thermic effect of food is the energy spent digesting, absorbing and storing what you eat, and it is roughly 10% of intake - higher for protein, lower for fat. Non-exercise activity thermogenesis covers everything from walking to the bathroom to fidgeting, and it is the most variable component between individuals. Structured exercise is the smallest slice for most people, which surprises anyone who trains hard.
The variability in the middle component is the reason two people of identical size and training habits can differ by hundreds of calories a day. A desk job with 3,000 steps and an active job with 12,000 steps are not the same person metabolically, even if they both train three times a week.

Why the gap decides whether your diet works
Suppose your BMR is 1,700 kcal and your TDEE is 2,650. If you set a 500 kcal deficit from BMR and eat 1,200 kcal, you have actually created a 1,450 kcal deficit - a starvation-level plan that will cost muscle, wreck training and end in a rebound. Setting the same 500 kcal deficit from TDEE means eating about 2,150 kcal, which is a plan you can hold for months.
The same mistake appears in the other direction when people compare themselves to a friend: 'she eats 2,400 calories and stays slim' usually means her TDEE is 2,600 and she is eating slightly under it, not that she has a magic metabolism.
A worked example across both numbers
A 30-year-old man at 178 cm and 75 kg: resting energy is 1,718 kcal. Sedentary, his daily total is 1,718 x 1.2, or about 2,062 kcal. Moderately active it is 2,662 kcal, and training twice a day it would be 3,264 kcal.
A 30-year-old woman at 165 cm and 60 kg: resting energy is 1,320 kcal. Sedentary that is 1,584 kcal, moderate activity gives 2,046 kcal, and very active training gives 2,277 kcal. In both cases the resting figure is the anchor and the activity multiplier is what turns it into a number you can eat.
Common confusions
Four mix-ups account for most of the confusion around these terms. 'Metabolism' is used to mean resting energy in conversation but daily total in research. 'Maintenance calories' means TDEE. 'Metabolic damage' usually describes a combination of lost tissue, reduced daily movement and increased appetite, not a broken metabolism. And 'starving slows your metabolism' is true at extremes and mostly irrelevant at ordinary diet sizes.

Which number should you use?
Use TDEE for intake decisions, always. Use BMR only to understand your floor and to see how much headroom activity gives you. If you want to compare two people's metabolism, compare resting energy; if you want to plan a diet, compare daily totals.
And then treat whichever number you use as a first estimate. Two weeks of consistent eating and morning weigh-ins will tell you more about your real maintenance than any equation, because it captures your actual job, your actual steps and your actual training.
The 30-second sanity check
Before you trust any figure, run one multiplication: body weight in pounds x 14 gives a rough maintenance number for a moderately active adult, and x 10 is a rough resting number. If a calculator returns something far outside that window, one of the inputs is wrong.
The check is crude and it is not a substitute for an equation, but it catches the two errors that actually happen: entering pounds where the form expects kilograms, and picking the athlete multiplier for three gym sessions a week. Both produce a number that looks plausible on screen and is wrong by several hundred calories.

Is TDEE the same as BMR?

Why is my BMR higher than an online calculator says?
Most calculators estimate resting energy from equations rather than measuring it, and equations carry roughly 10% error. Body composition also matters: more lean mass means a higher resting burn at the same weight.
Can I raise my BMR?
Slightly, by adding muscle - about 10 to 15 kcal per kilogram per day. Raising daily movement is a far bigger lever than raising resting energy.
Does BMR fall as you age?
It falls gradually, mostly because lean mass falls and because people become less active. The Mifflin-St Jeor equation subtracts 5 kcal per year of age to capture the average trend.
Is a fast metabolism real?
Individual resting rates vary, but the larger differences between people are in daily movement - steps, standing, fidgeting - rather than in resting energy. Reported 'fast metabolism' usually means high non-exercise activity.
Should I eat at my BMR to lose weight faster?
No. Eating at resting energy creates a deficit far larger than 20%, which accelerates muscle loss and is rarely sustainable. Use TDEE and cut from there.
