Body Fat Measurement Methods Compared
Every body-fat method is an estimate. What differs is the size of the error and what the error responds to.

The methods, compared
There are three families of method. Tape-based equations predict body fat from circumferences. Impedance devices estimate it from the resistance of a small current passed through the body. Reference methods such as DEXA and displacement testing measure it more directly, at higher cost and lower convenience.

Tape methods: what they can and cannot do
The US Navy method uses neck, waist and hip or height measurements in an equation derived from military personnel. It is quick, free and reproducible if you measure the same way every time, which makes it good for tracking change over months.
It assumes a fat distribution typical of the population it was derived from, so it is least reliable for very muscular bodies, very lean bodies and people whose fat sits unusually on the limbs rather than the trunk. The number can be off by several points in absolute terms while still moving in the right direction as body composition changes.
Impedance scales and smart scales
Bioelectrical impedance sends a small current through the body and estimates lean mass from how easily it flows, since water and lean tissue conduct better than fat. Because the current follows the path of least resistance, most consumer scales effectively measure the legs and lower trunk, which is a poor sample of overall body composition.
Hydration moves the reading more than fat does in day-to-day use. A hard training session, a salty meal, alcohol or a hot day can shift the number by several percentage points within 24 hours. Measured under identical conditions - morning, fasted, after the bathroom - the trend carries some information; a single reading does not.
What DEXA actually reports
DEXA passes two low-dose X-ray beams through the body and separates bone mineral, lean tissue and fat by how much each attenuates the beams. It also reports regional fat distribution, which is more useful than the single percentage figure because abdominal fat carries different risk than fat on the hips.
Its accuracy depends on the machine, the software version and the technician, and two scans on different machines can differ by a percentage point or two. For most people the value is the regional breakdown and a reliable baseline, not a definitive number.
Displacement and other reference methods
The Bod Pod measures body volume by air displacement and converts it to density, then to body fat using an assumed density for lean tissue. Underwater weighing does the same job with water. Both are accurate for the average body and drift for people at the extremes, because the assumed lean-tissue density is not universal.
Three-dimensional scanners and caliper protocols sit in between: useful when the same tester or the same device is used repeatedly, unreliable when compared across different ones.
What accuracy means in practice
An error of 3 to 4 percentage points is normal for tape and caliper methods, which means a reading of 22% could reasonably be 18% or 26%. Reference methods reduce that to 1 or 2 points, and still carry error.
The consequence is that comparing your number with a table or with someone else is close to meaningless, while comparing it with your own number from three months ago under the same conditions is useful. This is the single most practical point about body-fat measurement.
Measuring change rather than the level
To track change, hold the method, the tester and the conditions constant. Measure in the morning, fasted and hydrated normally, before training, at the same points on the body and with the tape at the same tension. Record the number and ignore the category it falls into.
A change of 1 to 2 percentage points over two to three months is meaningful. Anything smaller than that sits inside the measurement error, which is why a single alarming reading after a salty dinner is not evidence of anything.

The ranges below are population references, not targets to chase. Athletic levels are the range seen in trained people; essential fat is the minimum needed for normal physiological function and is not a goal.

How the calculator estimates yours
The body fat calculator uses the US Navy circumference equation, with a separate formula for men and women and different measurements in metric and imperial mode. It displays the result with a note about the method rather than as a diagnosis.
Two practical warnings come with the number. It assumes an average fat distribution, and it is sensitive to how the waist tape is placed. Measure at the navel, keep the tape level and snug without compressing the skin, and take the reading at the end of a normal exhale.
Why the number provokes strong reactions
Body-fat percentage is treated as a verdict in a way that waist circumference is not, even though the tape is often the more useful measurement. Two reasons drive that: the number looks precise, and the categories come with cultural weight attached.
The clinically useful thresholds are about risk, not appearance. Abdominal fat measured by waist height carries a clearer signal about metabolic risk than a percentage from a consumer scale, and it does not move when hydration changes. If the goal is health, the tape is the better instrument; if the goal is a physique, photographs and the tape still beat the scale.
